Authenticity isn’t a solo act—it’s a culture. 🎭

Ever notice how people "shape-shift" depending on who is in the room? 👥
In The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey suggests we "Begin with the End in Mind." He challenges us to live according to our core values so that our legacy reflects who we truly are. But in the modern workplace, many professionals feel disempowered to do just that. 🛑
The Science of "Masking" 🧠
Psychologically, when we don't feel safe, we engage in Self-Monitoring. Research shows that high self-monitors constantly scan the room for social cues to adjust their behaviour. While this is a survival skill, it leads to burnout and lower job satisfaction. 📉
Authenticity isn't just a "soft skill"—it’s a byproduct of Psychological Safety. According to Harvard researcher Amy Edmondson, teams with high psychological safety outperform others because members don't fear being judged for being themselves. ✨
If you want a culture of authenticity, you have to build the floor for it to stand on:
1️⃣ Stop the "Idea Killers": Cutting someone off during a brainstorm triggers a threat response in the brain. It signals that "different" isn't welcome. 🚫🗣️
2️⃣ Lead with Empathy: Neuroscience shows that when managers practice empathy, it lowers cortisol (stress) levels in their team, allowing for more creative and "authentic" thinking.
3️⃣ Connect Values to Action: Don't just list company values on a wall. Use them to rationalise decisions. They should be the foundation of HOW behaviours are generated. When people see a "Why" rooted in shared values, they feel safer showing up as their "Who." 🧭
Authenticity thrives in the light, but it dies in a culture of judgment. 💡
