There is a common misconception in the corporate world: The higher you climb, the more decisions you should make. 🧗‍♂️

Many leaders believe that accountability equals "having all the answers." They spend their days instructing, directing, and green-lighting every minor move. But here is the hard truth: if you are the smartest person in every room, your organisation is in trouble. 📉

The Science of "Decision Fatigue" 🧠

Psychologically, we have a limited supply of mental energy for making choices and for exploring other perspectives. This is known as Decision Fatigue. When a leader insists on being the ultimate bottleneck for every decision (perhaps unintentionally):

1️⃣Cognitive Load increases: Your ability to make high-stakes strategic choices diminishes. ⚡️

2️⃣Learned Helplessness kicks in: When teams are constantly told what to do, their brains stop seeking solutions. They become passive, waiting for instruction rather than innovating as they feel unheard. 😶‍🌫️

The "Safety" Gap 🛡️

We often see brilliant technical experts struggle when they transition into people leadership. They focus on the task but forget the human. 🏗️

In psychology, we call this a lack of Psychological Safety. Research by Harvard’s Amy Edmondson shows that if people don't feel safe to speak up or make mistakes, they stop engaging. You don’t get their best work; you get their most "cautious" work. ⚠️

Legacy vs. Control 🏛️

Stephen Covey famously said to "Begin with the end in mind." Ask yourself: How do I want to be remembered? 💭 No one wants a legacy of burned bridges and a demoralised workforce. We all want to lead a high-performing, motivated team. But motivation isn't something you "do" to people—it is a byproduct of Trust Culture. 🤝 Trust has a direct correlation with performance, so lots to gain!📈

Shift from Command to Connection 🔗

Real leadership isn’t about being the "Chief Decider." It’s about being the Chief Architect of Environment. 🏗️✨

When you build a culture of trust, engagement follows. When engagement follows, motivation becomes self-sustaining. Invite your team to share ideas and coach them in exploring these ideas to identify risks themselves. Maybe you will see a perspective you haven’t before. 👋💡

If you feel your leadership style might be scaling your business or creating a bottleneck, reach out for a chat! ☕ We help leaders transition from "instructors" to "empowerers”, and the best part is it is a budget-friendly solution. 💰✨
